About the project

A draw-and-guess party game that runs straight in the browser with no account. One player draws a word, the others race to guess it, and the fastest score the most.

Everything is built to get people playing quickly: a room with an invite code to send to friends, and drawing and guessing in real time between players.

Three steps

One player draws the word and the rest guess; the faster you guess, the more points you score.

SketchRush, how to play

A room your way

Room name, word topic, language, number of rounds, time per round and maximum players, with a private option that keeps the room off the list.

An invite code, then go

The host shares the code or link with friends, the game starts with at least two players, and guesses go in the chat.

How it’s built

Technology

  • TypeScript
  • React
  • Node.js
  • Socket.IO
  • Redis
  • PostgreSQL
  • Zod
  • Docker
  • A TypeScript project in three packages, server, web and a shared package, so data validation follows the same rules on both sides.
  • Drawing and guesses travel over WebSockets in real time, with Redis to spread rooms across more than one server.
  • A player who drops off returns to the same seat, score, canvas and clock.
  • The server checks every guess, normalising Arabic spelling, with a “close!” nudge that never gives the word away.
  • Vector drawing with a full toolset, pencil, brush, eraser, lines, shapes, fill and undo, by mouse, touch or stylus.
  • In-game moderation, kick, mute, vote-kick, a language filter and rate limits, plus automated tests for multiplayer play.
